Happy Birthday Bennie

Ben Byer, October 2003
Dodgeville Painting, July 16, 2003

Our son Ben would have celebrated his 47th birthday today, January 8, 2018. It’s been ten years since he left us. Some days it feels like only a month has passed. Other days more like an eternity.

He was a writer, an actor, a filmmaker. And a painter, which was a surprise to everyone. On my 60th birthday, he captured the day for me in a primitive style. The canvas included our yellow house in Dodgeville, Wisconsin, our two dogs Emma and Annie, the tractor, a helium filled balloon that floated overhead and the two life sized cows Steve created for the meadow. In the middle of the day, we had a hail storm, a July surprise. So Ben took back the painting to splash white blotches over the entire canvas.

I have the painting hanging in my office where I can see it every day. It reminds me of Ben’s energy and courage, his talent and his belief that he would prevail. And he has.
