The Passy-Muir®  Valve

"In my experience, it is a wonderful device to help ALS patients like Divaldo communicate, but most of all to help them to swallow properly."

Gustavo Ghion
Respiratory Physical Therapist
São Paulo, Brazil

Communication is the basis of human connection and, unfortunately, something that ALS often takes away from those living with the disease.

When David Muir, a muscular dystrophy patient, was placed on a ventilator, he was unable to speak for four months. He wanted to help others like him avoid the frustration and isolation he had suffered and, through a partnership with Patricia Passy, created the Passy-Muir valve.

The Passy-Muir valve is a simple medical device used by tracheostomy and ventilator patients. When placed on the hub of the tracheostomy tube or in-line with the ventilator circuit, the Passy-Muir Valve redirects air flow through the vocal folds, mouth and nose enabling voice and improved communication. Years of evidence-based research has shown that the Passy-Muir Valve offers patients numerous clinical benefits beyond communication.

It allows tracheotomy patients, including those with ALS, to be off of the ventilator temporarily. With the ventilator temporarily removed, people can once again do things like speak and swallow on their own. The valve can also improve secretion management and infection control, two very important issues for people living with ALS.

ALS Worldwide has helped many patients gain access to Passy-Muir valve installations and fully supports its use. To learn more, please visit Passy-Muir's website. If you would like to discuss this option with ALS Worldwide, please contact us at [email protected]

If you are interested in this helpful device, please discuss it with your physicians and loved ones.
