Peace and Well Being Through Meditation

On March 9, His Holiness the Dalai Lama participated in a discussion entitled, “The World We Make – Well-Being in 2030” hosted by the Center for Healthy Minds, University of Wisconsin-Madison. The questions presented were “How might the world look roughly 15 years from now if we choose well-being today? While economic prosperity has generally increased, why haven’t happiness and well-being? How can we learn to be happy, to be kind, and to be grateful?”  The presenters included Richard Davidson, Neuroscientist and Founder, Center for Healthy Minds, Sona Dimidjian, Psychologist and Women’s Well-Being Expert, University of Colorado, Soma Stout, Executive External Lead for Health Improvement and Dan Harris, ABC News Correspondent.

One of the highlights of the event centered on the benefits of meditation that have been investigated scientifically. The following skills can be developed through meditation and enhance well-being. 

1. Resilience is a skill that can be cultivated and provides the ability to recover from adversity more rapidly.
2. A positive outlook provides the ability to see basic goodness, savor the experience, reduces depression and promotes physical health.
3. A wandering mind is an unhappy mind.  Therefore learning to pay attention promotes health.
4. Generosity is most important because oxygen activated in the brain leads to well being, lowers stress and calms the mind.

Meditation can be done anywhere at anytime and can be cultivated by anyone whether you are a caregiver, an ALS patient, a friend or a family member.
